The durability of a railway axle depends largely on the materials and manufacturing processes used. Since the axle bears both static and dynamic loads it must have high strength toughness and fatigue resistance. The most common materials are forged alloy steels such as 30CrMo or 40CrNiMoA which offer excellent mechanical properties.
